Recipe: Rainbow Veggie Noodle Salad — Recipes from The Kitchn

Yes, the spiralizer is a bit of a novelty, but it helps make things a bit more playful. I’ve found that my ambivalence towards cucumbers is immediately assuaged when I turn them into noodles, and I’ve yet to meet a spiralized zucchini dish I haven’t liked. This dish capitalizes on the novelty of the spiralizer to create a vibrant and colorful veggie noodle dish that might just change the way you feel about salad.

Meditation For Black Lives Matter

Yogactivism comes in waves. When there’s a cause, there’s sure to be a swell of yogis there to fight for it. But when it comes to the Black Lives Matter movement, the majority of the yoga community for whatever reason has gone from om to mum. Perhaps it’s too political? Too controversial? While inclusivity and […]

Why Do We Love Rainbow Food? — End of the Rainbow

You’d have to be living under a rock to not see some part of the rainbow food movement that’s swept the internet and major cities over the last several years. Social media went from being anti-artificial food coloring to spreading the word like wildfire as soon another familiar food was found laced with a hot new hue or two. We covet them from faraway places, drive to larger cities to partake, and then pin DIY versions to our boards as soon as they pop up. We just can’t get enough!

Ice cream, cookies, and bagels are transformed into instant rockstars the second they contain a new shade or entire rainbow inside. So what is it about rainbow food that we love?

Health Benefits Of Mushrooms You Need To Know

http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/comments/nutritionclubca.wordpress.com/2224/

Health benefits of mushrooms are among the most highly regarded nutrient sources according to experts and no matter what variety, they do have their share of powerful minerals and vitamins that can provide many of the ones needed by the body.

Health benefits of mushrooms are no joke

You may not be totally aware of it, but mushrooms do carry a powerhouse of nutrients that some even have more of compared to the usual food sources that we have grown accustomed to.

Vitamin D

Surprisingly mushrooms are one of the very few dietary sources of Vitamin D, which is critical in maintaining heart and bone health. Mushrooms that are exposed to sunlight when they grow product Vitamin D.

In fact, scientists found out that mushrooms, when exposed to high levels of ultraviolet B just before they are harvested to be sold at the market converts many, if not most, of the active plant sterols found in them and changes it to vitamin D.

Many mushroom producers in the United States are producing Portobello mushrooms fortified with natural vitamin D. An 85-gram serving of these mushrooms provides no less than 400 IU of vitamin D, which is almost half of the 1000 IU daily requirement of vitamin D prescribed by nutrition experts.

Immune -booster

The American Society for Nutrition, based on a recent study, found that button mushrooms help boost the immune system by increasing the production of antiviral substances and other proteins released by the cells to help protect and repair the body’s tissues.

A separate study also found that mushroom also enhances the maturity of cells in the immune system called the dendritic cells from the bone marrow. This helps the body ward off diseases and strengthens the immune system to defend the body from invading microbes.

High in antioxidants

Especially the portobello and crimini varieties, these mushrooms have been found to contain large amounts of antioxidants that help the body fight off free radicals that result from oxidative stress.

Researchers from the Penn State University declared that mushrooms have one of the highest values of oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) values.

Boosts metabolism

Among the many varieties of mushrooms, those with the highest amounts of vitamin B are the crimini, button and oyster mushrooms. They have high amounts of vitamins B2 and B3.

These are just some of the many benefits of mushrooms for the body and make sure you have a bunch of these to go around with your regular meals.

Whole Head Transplant May Get The Go Signal By Early 2017

http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/comments/nutritionclubca.wordpress.com/2222/

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Whole head transplant may seem like a story fresh out of the movie screen, but is in fact a true story that will be able to indeed break world records for a successful attachment.

Whole head transplant gets mixed reactions

There’ll be those that will believe and there are those who don’t. But once the procedure becomes successful, Russian paraplegic Valery Spiridonov, he just might have a new lease in life.

This is going to be another chance at a medical breakthrough for Italian neurosurgeon Dr. Sergio Canavero, who will be partnering with Chinese surgeon Dr. Xiaoping Rin and have started preparations in the next few months preceding the controversial head transplant procedure.

Chance to be normal

Spiridonov has been suffering from Werdnig- Hoffman Disease since he was very young. This is a rare yet often fatal health condition that breaks down the muscles and dissolves the tissues.

Spiridonov is hopeful that they do not get to see any unlikely predicament over the preparations and even during the highly-sensitive procedure. He also points out that he totally rests his hopes on the success of the operation and hopes to rid himself of the disease that has plagued him since childhood.

Too good to be true

There are many experts from the medical community who are expressing their great concern over the process itself, after giving rise to questions about whether the procedure would be successful or not.

For his part, Canavero is publishing his plans and detailing it daily, confident that he will succeed in the procedure after it has been successfully tested with mice along with some evidence of studies and experiments highlighted in the journal Surgical Neurology International.

Skeptics, however, abound claiming that since the procedure has not yet been tested on humans, the complexities of the procedure may be too difficult and could end killing the patient.

Others also raised concerns that Canavero may be extremely over-estimating his capacity and his team in conducting the procedure. While others are criticizing Canavero for promoting what they call junk science and may only end up creating only false hopes.

Big team of surgeons and support staff

Canavero said that the procedure would require no less than 80 surgeons and may cost a lot of money to the tune of tens millions of dollars. But he is confident that it will all be for the best as he expressed a 90 plus percent chance that the procedure will become successful.

If there was a magical list of secret recipes that everyone on the internet has attempted to make before, KFC’s fried chicken is pretty much at the top of that list. The Economics of Farm Stands and Farmers Markets — Farm Stand Freestyle

Farm stands and farmers markets are the grocery stores of summer, when the produce is so ripe and flavorful you don’t need to do much to take it from your canvas tote to the plate. But while we tend to lump the two together — and it’s true that you can buy many of the same fruits and veggies at both — farm stands and farmers market are actually different.

Here, we look at the difference to you and to the farmer in terms of cost, labor, and quality of produce.

5 Front Porch Dos and Don’ts — The Front Porch

It may look like a front porch, but it’s also my office and an extended living room. I feel at ease here, sitting on a loveseat made from willow tree branches, with my laptop computer resting on my legs as I write. Friends visit and we watch the fireflies light up against the trees come evening.

Although I love spending time here, and consider it much more than just a front porch, I am careful not to abuse this space — especially since I am on the main drag of my town. Sadly, some people fall into some etiquette black holes when it comes to their own porch behaviors.

Here are five basic rules everyone should really abide by.
