How Protein Shakes & Bars Stack Up Against All-Natural Protein Sources — Protein 101

It’s hard to miss the shelves and aisles and impressive displays devoted to protein shakes and bars at your local grocery store — it doesn’t need to be a health food store for the bars to taunt you at the checkout line. If you’re not someone who consumes these packaged products, you may very well wonder what all the fuss is about. Or if you are someone who grabs a protein bar as a snack in the middle of the day, you may wonder if it’s really a good choice. Here’s the truth.

17 Skillet Dinners You Can Make in 30 Minutes — Recipes from The Kitchn

One-skillet meals are something we turn to often because we know what they promise: a manageable list of ingredients usually full of the foods we often have on hand (eggs, chicken thighs, a can of beans, maybe a few frozen fillets of salmon), a shorter cook time (because longer than an hour on weekdays isn’t often possible), and a delicious dish to share at the family table or to save for tomorrow’s lunch. From comforting pastas, to fast and fancy fish dinners, to pizza, there are so many possibilities. Here are 17 recipes to prove it.

Recipe: Bacon Gruyère Egg Bites — Quick and Easy Breakfast Recipes

There’s been an increasing demand for low-carb fare, so Starbucks answered the call with Sous Vide Egg Bites. These eggy bites are cooked sous vide (in a low-temperature water bath) until velvety smooth and are studded with bacon and cheese or vegetables. They’ve proven so popular that I haven’t been able to find any to sample in my local stores!

These egg bites are such an appealing idea, especially as a protein-packed on-the-go breakfast, that I came up with my own version instead. The result is creamy and rich with crispy bacon and Gruyère cheese, and can be eaten out of hand. Oh, and the best part is that you don’t need a sous-vide machine to make these!

I Didn’t Register for Formal Dinnerware and I Actually Regret It — The Happy Ever After Wedding Registry

When my husband and I got married almost four years ago, we didn’t register for much. We had already lived together for a few years and we were in our 30s, so we had a pretty decent stock of essentials. It wasn’t like we were fresh out of college and looking to replace hand-me-down pots and pans. We also lived in a small New York City apartment and I couldn’t imagine ever needing any more stuff.

Together, we made the executive decision to skip the formal dinnerware and instead asked our families for a set of everyday whites from Crate & Barrel. (Just registering for the plates, bowls, and serving platter. I felt very strongly about keeping the mismatched mugs we already had!)

Recipe: One-Pot Braised Cabbage with Bacon — Southern Food Recipes

Cabbage is pretty simple, as vegetables go. It’s a beautiful, tightly bound ball of green-yellow leaves with a distinct pungent scent and taste. But when chopped up and left to melt and brown in salty, savory bacon fat, cabbage transforms into a pot of soft, mellow vegetable magic that soothes the soul.

Southern cooks know this magic well. Here’s how to bring all of that cabbage magic into your own kitchen.

This Monstrous Machine That Chews Up Beauty And Spits Out Money

I have been teaching yoga for almost seven years now, and in that time, I’ve been lucky to be able to offer all of my public classes on a sliding scale. Sliding scale is a means of making yoga more affordable, by making it cheaper for those who need it to be, while those who can afford to pay more do so, with the folks at the top of the scale subsidizing the folks at the bottom.

This Week’s Meal Plan: 5 Family Dinners to Make Before Things Get a Little Crazy — This Week’s Meal Plan

This week kicks off what always proves to be a busy month for our family. Between Teacher Appreciation Week and Mother’s Day, and hosting out-of-town guests and finalizing summer camps, we have lots of potluck parties, end-of-the-school-year celebrations, book club meetings, and even a weekend away planned in May.

I’m relishing this week when we only have two things on the calendar as an opportunity to take it easy and stick with some of our family favorites and use up some ingredients languishing in the fridge and freezer.

Food Rituals Will Help You Bring Your Best Self to the Table — Food and Ritual

This past winter I began lighting candles each night just before our small family of three sat down to dinner. It changed the way we eat. Even now in the long-lit days of a northern spring, a reminder to take a deep breath and lower our voices before lifting our forks does the same as the candles that once lit our table.

For years we slid into our chairs, fresh from email, homework, or feeding the dogs. We arrived at vaguely different times and jumped up and down to hastily get one more thing we’d forgotten. We continued, without pause even for breath, the conversations started in the kitchen or between the top and bottom of the staircase as we rushed to dole out the food. No, we never have screens at, or even near, our dinner. Yes, a good five out of seven nights we eat together as a family at the dining table. The food is usually homemade, carefully planned, and tuned into a whole globe of culinary traditions. But our last meal of the day was still missing something.

Then we met a family who did things a little differently.

Recipe: Jacques Pépin’s Garlic Chicken Breasts — Quick and Easy Weeknight Dinners

I’ve got a thing for nuggets of crispy chicken. Not necessarily chicken nuggets — although good ones can fall in this category — but chicken that’s been cut into chunks, is cooked until crispy, and takes well to eating in one or two bites. What can I say? I’m just looking for joy in the form of a salty, meaty, crunchy revelation.

When I came across this recipe in Jacques Pépin’s book, Poulets & Legumes: My Favorite Chicken and Vegetables Recipes, I was a little surprised. I remember scanning through the ingredients and method, getting more excited as I went on. Did I just find my ideal chicken nugget? All signs were pointing to a golden, crispy yes. There was no breading step, no deep-frying, and no mess required. Instead, this recipe promised everything my crispy-chicken-loving heart desired, with the help of a bit of Wondra flour and a nonstick skillet. Garlic and parsley are added at the end for one final flourish of flavor, but it was the method behind preparing the chicken that really got me.
