If there’s one highly controversial scientific topic heating up these days, it’s gene editing. This led to a 3-day summit, which started last Tuesday, to discuss about its future. It was also reported that the last time scientists gathered to talk about it is way back in the year 1975.

Gene editing is the modification of DNAs, whether it’s in humans, plants or animals. However, the reason why it’s good is also the reason why it’s bad – scientists can change the DNA. This means they can easily twist something into either good or evil.

So, should we be editing human DNA? Read this interesting article by Robin Andrews on IFL Science:

Should We Be Editing Human DNA?

Ever since the structure of DNA was discovered in 1953, our constantly evolving understanding of it, and our application of this knowledge, has represented one of the greatest endeavors in human history. It’s a science not without controversy, however: The modification of human DNA is a particularly sensitive subject. Read more…

Whether it’s replaced, removed or inserted, should we be editing human DNA?

The pros think that it’s the best way to eradicate a wide variety of diseases, including HIV and cancer. In fact, just a month ago, a one-year-old girl who was dying from leukemia was saved by it. That’s the world’s first case. Some also say it can solve world hunger, and make unlimited clean energy.

On the other hand, the antis think that it’s inhumane and unnatural. And since it’s a risk, it may or may not do more harm than good. It just makes sense since the world would be much freakier if this technology will just be as easy as editing a Word document over the next few years.

Well, there’s one thing that’s sure: it comes with both risks and possibilities.
