As of 2011, about 6.4 million children aged 4-17 years old have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with boys being the highest rating. The average age of diagnosis is 7 years old.

But it can also happen to adults. In fact, around 4 percent of Americans aged 18 years and older deal with ADHD every day.

Moreover, an average person may spend roughly $14,576 for treatment each year.

What really causes it? A recent study has shown that brain connections may reveal attention deficits, and this finding can be used to find a solution to “normalize the brain.” Read more in this report by Jon Hamilton on NPR:

A Peek At Brain Connections May Reveal Attention Deficits

A look at the brain’s wiring can often reveal whether a person has trouble staying focused, and even whether he or she has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, known as ADHD. Read more…

ADHD affects the reading comprehension of almost half of the children, and among the common symptoms are poor memory and organizational skills. Other coexisting conditions include difficulty learning, antisocial behavior, anxiety and sleep disorder, as well as depression.

Medication treatment and behavioral therapy are some ways to eliminate ADHD in children, and hopefully researchers will find more ways as this discovery of how brain connections may reveal attention deficits.
