Mary Allwood, 26, from Brixham, Devon, England, was rushed to the hospital last November 2015 after complaining of severe pains at her side and was diagnosed with liver damage from red bull energy drinks she was consuming heavily.
Liver damage from red bull similar to effects of alcohol
Doctors who treated Allwood were initially convinced that the liver damage was caused by excessive alcohol consumption and were surprised when she told them that she was severely addicted to energy drinks during the past four years.
What further caught the doctors by surprise was the addiction of Allwood, which was so intense that she drank no less than 20 cans of red bull every day, equivalent to at least 17 calorie filled chocolate bars for sugar and caffeine levels equivalent to 16 cups of coffee.
It was a wonder she survived when the prescribed limit of energy drinks is a maximum of two cans per day based on industry standards.
Damaging effects
Allwood said she started drinking the popular brand to help her with cope with the demands of parenting and home-keeping, where she would wake up in the morning and used to drink a can straight out of the fridge and begin her usual daily tasks.
Months later she then was craving for more and when she was not able to drink one, she would feel down and depressed, which made her crave for some more just to be able to feel good and regain her energy for the day.
When she needed to replenish her stocks, she went to the nearby grocery to buy several packs at a time, telling the grocer that she owned a restaurant and that the energy drinks was one of her best sellers.
She gained a great deal of weight from a size 16 to a size 24 in a matter of months and the energy drink started to replace most of the fluids that she took for her body and there was a time when she experienced an episode of heart palpitations it did not deter her from her addiction.
When she started experiencing stabbing pains at her side last November, she was rushed to the hospital and an MRI scan found her liver swelled twice the size of the normal one.
This was her reality check and since then, she was determined to stop her addiction and went cold turkey. She was experiencing withdrawal symptoms at first, but was able to hurdle through it and right now is no longer craving for the drink.
She also said that the scare liver damage from red bull was all it took to make her realize what she was in for and decided to live her life normally and she is starting to lose all the weight she gained with her liver now back to its normal functions.
